Are you one of those providers that keeps hearing about POLST and knows you need to learn more but simply don’t have time? Are you a California healthcare professional who’s heard about the new form but haven’t had a chance to learn more?

You are not alone!

The California State University Institute for Palliative Care is now offering an online, self-paced course for healthcare professionals on how to work with POLST, and in particular the new California POLST form.

Developed in conjunction with the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California, “Working with POLST for Professionals” provides healthcare professionals with a basic grounding in POLST. Through our work at the Institute, we know healthcare providers want to know and honor the wishes of patients with serious illness.

This course is designed to help the busy healthcare professional understand the role and value of POLST—and how to employ it in documenting and honoring patient wishes—from the comfort of your own computer. The course is self-paced and takes approximately three hours to complete. You can take the course in “pieces,” starting and stopping as you have time.

If you are not practicing in California, you may still come across similar POLST/MOLST-style forms and should still understand how POLST can work where you are. (Get more information about POLST in your home state at POLST.org.)

Here are a few more reasons why this online course is so important:

  • Study from your desktop anytime, anywhere
  • Quickly supports expanded POLST use within any organization
  • Get an in-depth understanding of the best ways to use POLST
  • Develop an understanding of important clinical, ethical, and legal considerations
  • Start and stop the course as necessary
  • Get continuing access to the course as needed for 30 days after completion
  • Build your confidence in using POLST and to answer patient questions clearly
  • Gain a deep understanding of this form that enhances communication between team members
  • Help participants distinguish between DNR, PIC, MOLST, and how POLST works with Advance HealthCare Directives (AHCD)
  • Answer frequently asked questions in greater detail
  • Be able to clarify who can complete the form and who must sign off
And, if you want CE units, we will be happy to provide them for a small additional charge.
