e-Patient Ambassadors Launch Palliative Care Advocacy Efforts

Originally posted on July 12, 2019

In the coming weeks, the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California (CCCC) is launching a unique palliative care advocacy effort to increase accurate understanding of palliative care among the public and providers by tapping into the passionate and authentic voices of palliative care patients and their caregivers.

As part of our e-Patient Ambassador program, CCCC has recruited a cohort of five socially-active patients with serious illness (e-Patients) or their caregivers to use social media and connections with national disease-related organizations to increase general awareness of and accurate understanding about palliative care.

The initiative is funded by a Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award and is part of a portfolio of projects approved for PCORI funding to develop a skilled community of patients and other stakeholders from across the entire healthcare enterprise and to involve them meaningfully in every aspect of PCORI’s work.

Over the next year, the e-Patient Ambassadors will be working with CCCC to develop and communicate valuable messages about how palliative care can improve the lives of those with serious illnesses. The use of social media to amplify the palliative care messages will be an important part of the e-Patient Ambassadors’ efforts.

The e-Patient Ambassadors, who live in different parts of the United States, first came together in April 2019 during CCCC’s 11th annual Palliative Care Summit in San Francisco. During the Summit, the Ambassadors were able to attend sessions to enhance their understanding of palliative care and meet as a group to discuss the project and share ideas.
