SESSION DESCRIPTION
Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) affect 2–3% of the population and are associated with higher hospitalizations and healthcare disparities. Clinicians often feel unprepared to assess symptoms, discuss goals-of-care, and build trust with patients and caregivers. This presentation highlights practical frameworks and validated tools, like DisDat, to enhance symptom assessment, communication, and end-of-life care. Interactive case-based learning, demonstrations, and reflective exercises will equip clinicians with strategies to provide compassionate, effective care for individuals with IDD.
OBJECTIVES
- Analyze the epidemiology and healthcare disparities associated with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD).
- Evaluate challenges in communication, symptom recognition, and goals-of-care discussions for patients with IDD.
- Apply and integrate evidence-based frameworks to optimize communication, symptom management, and therapeutic relationships with patients with IDD and their caregivers.
