SESSION DESCRIPTION
Nurses in a variety of settings, after receiving education and information about Palliative Care, recognized that this was needed in their practice settings. Needs varied, however, based upon population and unit culture. Based upon unit need and with the mentorship of the Palliative Care CNS and NP, diverse groups of nurses organized to become Palliative Champions. Their creative approaches and innovative solutions were found to be more effective in integrating Palliative Care into their settings than a top-down Palliative educational approach. The advocacy for both Primary and Expert Palliative Care lead to improved utilization of the System Palliative Care teams.
OBJECTIVES
- Anticipate potential uses for the Palliative Champions model.
- Discuss methods in which Palliative Champions can be used to educate and support on Primary Palliative Care.
- Discuss collaborative ways in which unit/population based Palliative Champions can interface with the interdisciplinary Palliative team.
