SESSION DESCRIPTION
The session demonstrates the authors’ practices over 20 years in helping pediatric patients and their families experience death in the preferred location. It will offer case vignettes illustrating how end-of-life care can be facilitated outside the ICU for patients on ventilators or inotropes, based upon family preferences. Published evidence will be presented as well as outlining considerations for others to consider in implementing similar care. Q&A time will be provided.
OBJECTIVES
- Recognize the established value to families of facilitating death at home, which is the preferred death location setting for children.
- Analyze barriers to safe, comfortable extubation outside of the PICU.
- Develop strategies and skills to allow seriously ill children to die in their preferred location.
