SESSION DESCRIPTION
A variety of conversational models are available to palliative care practitioners to structure conversations. Two such models that have been well validated are the SPIKES model and the Serious Illness Conversation Guide. In this session, we build upon these two models by incorporating literary writing techniques and narrative medicine principles. The result is person-centered, highly acceptable, impactful conversations that lead to clear, next clinical steps.
OBJECTIVES
- Incorporate key elements of the SPIKES and Serious Illness Conversation Guide into ACP conversations.
- Formulate non medical metaphors to illustrate medical situations.
- Structure conversations to be patient-centric by incorporating literary writing and narrative medicine techniques.
